Welcome to our weekly spotlight on top high school talent in the area. We work with MY Shower Door to highlight local excellence.
Every week, we pick standout athletes based on coach reports and school nominations. You get to vote for the winner. Voting closes at 10 a.m. each Thursday.
The winner gets a special T-shirt from BSN Sports and a tote bag. We share the news on our social media. This is your chance to see the stars of Naples, Fort Myers, and Southwest Florida.
Selection criteria and how to nominate
Knowing how athletes are picked for this honor helps the whole Southwest Florida sports community. The process is clear and based on who knows the athletes best: their coaches, schools, and fans.
Athletes are chosen through official team submissions. There are two main ways to nominate an athlete:
- Coach Reports: Coaches can nominate by emailing sports@news-press.com and sports@naplesnews.com.
- School Nominations: Schools can also submit through the same emails.
Submissions must be in by 5 p.m. every Sunday. This is when the editorial team reviews and prepares the weekly poll. On time submissions help ensure all deserving athletes are considered.
After nominations close, the community gets to vote. Every Monday, a poll opens for the community vote. This vote decides the Athlete of the Week.
This system makes fans, parents, and students part of the decision. They can directly influence the winner by voting. The award honors not just athletic skill but also community support.
We want to make these steps clear to encourage everyone to participate. Your nomination and vote show the true spirit of local sports pride.
The Finalists: Player Spotlights
Let’s explore the profiles of this week’s top nominees. Here, we see how raw statistics meet the context of competition.
Each athlete gave a performance that caught everyone’s eye. We dive into what they did and why it was so impressive.
Brooke Bledsoe, Lely Softball
Bledsoe shone against Naples, a tough opponent. She went 2-for-5, hitting a home run and a triple. She also drove in four runs.
Her success against Naples is even more impressive. Her power play was key in a critical district game.

Kamara threw a pitching masterpiece against Key West. She struck out an amazing 17 times in a complete game.
Her performance wasn’t just about the numbers. It showed complete control over the game. It was a dominant showing in the circle.
Jadrien Carmo, Bishop Verot Track & Field
Carmo showed off his speed and versatility at a recent meet. He won the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.
His standout moment was setting a new personal record (PR). In track, a PR shows an athlete’s growth. It’s a special player spotlight moment.
Lonnie Campos, Island Coast Baseball
Campos was consistent in a 3-0 week for his team. He got six hits and drove in six runs.
His consistent play shows reliability and clutch performance. His efforts helped his team win big.
These four athletes show the top talent in Southwest Florida. Their performances, considering opponent strength and personal milestones, help voters decide.
Now, it’s up to the community to choose. Who had the most impactful week?
Winner profile: background, training routine, classroom/club life, quote from coach/teammate
Winning Athlete of the Week is more than just a single game. It shows daily hard work, like Bonnie Mielke from Fort Myers. Her win wasn’t luck but the result of hard work and balancing school.
Bonnie has always been dedicated to her sport. She didn’t become great overnight. Her success comes from years of hard work and competing against the best in Naples and Southwest Florida.
Her training is all about discipline. It mixes skill drills, strength training, and rest. A typical week includes:
- Technical skill work for hours after school.
- Cross-training sessions for agility and endurance.
- Mandatory recovery periods with good food and sleep.
This careful plan helps her perform well in games and stay healthy.
Managing school and sports is a big challenge. Bonnie keeps a high GPA by using study halls and planning her schoolwork. She also joins a school club, showing that being well-rounded helps in sports.
Her coach praises her dedication. “Bonnie’s work ethic is contagious,” the coach says. “She’s always first on the field and last to leave, but she knows when to study. Her maturity and commitment make her stand out.”
This shows that being a winner is a full-time job. For more on athletes like Bonnie, see our weekly basketball updates for Southwest, from Fort Myers to Naples.
Play breakdown: one defining sequence on video/diagram
To truly appreciate athletic excellence, let’s dissect a key play from a recent local matchup. This expert analysis goes beyond the scoreboard. It shows the technical skill and strategic impact of a single moment.
Our focus is on a critical at-bat from a thrilling 7-6 baseball victory. Caden Fricano, a standout from Ida Baker High School in the Cape Coral area, stepped up with the game on the line.
The sequence started with a full count. Runners were on base, and the pressure was high. The opposing pitcher, trying to force a walk, threw a fastball on the outer half of the plate.
Fricano’s swing was perfect. He kept his hands back, rotated his hips with force, and extended his arms to drive the pitch. The contact was clean and powerful, sending the ball soaring over the outfield fence.
This wasn’t just a home run. It was a momentum-shifting event that propelled his team to a narrow win. The play shows how a single, well-executed action can change the game.
In another Cape Coral showcase, Dominic Ardezzone of Aubrey Rogers lacrosse dominated with seven goals against Barron Collier. Each score involved complex off-ball movement and precise finishing. But for today’s lesson, Fricano’s homer is the perfect example of clutch performance.
Understanding these details—the count, the pitch selection, the biomechanics—changes how we watch sports. It turns fans from passive observers to informed analysts who can see the subtle artistry in the game.
College Recruiting/Next Steps (If Applicable)
Places like Immokalee are known for their athletic talent. But getting noticed by colleges is a challenge. For top athletes, being recognized is a big step. Now, they must turn that talent into a college spot.

First, understand the recruiting timeline. It’s not just one event but a long conversation. Coaches start looking for prospects early, often by sophomore year. The most important times for offers are junior year and the summer before senior year.
Your athletic skills are key, but they’re not everything. Colleges want student-athletes. A good academic record and test scores are important. They show you can handle school and sports well.
In today’s world, your highlight reel is your resume. A 3-5 minute video of your best plays is essential. It lets coaches see your skills easily. For athletes in places like Immokalee, a great video can stand out.
Being named Athlete of the Week is a big help. It shows your achievements are recognized. When coaches look you up online, seeing positive coverage boosts your profile. It shows you can perform well under pressure.
To get noticed, focus on these steps:
- Build Your Portfolio: Keep your highlight reel, resume, and grades up to date.
- Research & Target: Find schools that fit your athletic level, interests, and campus vibe.
- Initiate Contact: Fill out online forms and send emails to coaches with your reel and resume.
- Showcase Yourself: Go to college camps and showcases to meet coaches in person.
This journey takes time and effort. Not every email gets a reply, and the path is not always straight. Use your support system—coaches, counselors, and family. Communities like Immokalee often help guide and encourage athletes.
The goal is to find a college that fits you well. By taking charge early, you can make a plan for your future.
